A Licensed Counselor In Virginia: Meet Dr. Victoria McLaughlin

PhD, LPC, LSATP, CSAC, ACS, NCC

Hi! I am Victoria McLaughlin and have been in the field of counseling since 2010 and licensed since 2016. I would describe myself as a quiet, quirky “old soul” and a purpose-driven professional who deeply values authenticity and connection. I hold a Master of Education in Mental Health Counseling from Lincoln Memorial University and a Ph.D. in Counseling, Education, and Supervision from The College of William & Mary.

As a licensed counselor in Virginia, I approach every client and every role from a place of strength, believing fully in our innate ability to rise above adversity. My practice is a safe and affirming space for all individuals, and I am proud to supervise a team of hand-selected post-master’s residents in counseling who share this same commitment to effective, thoughtful care.

Working together, we can tailor an approach that supports your unique needs and helps you find clarity, healing, and growth. Be well and be strong. I look forward to our work together.

I Work With Adults Ages 18 And Older On A Wide Range Of Concerns

Here’s an overview of the areas in which I specialize:

  • Narcissistic Abuse Recovery & Parental Alienation Healing from the effects of narcissistic abuse or parental alienation can feel overwhelming and isolating. You may struggle with self-doubt, guilt, or conflicted emotions while trying to maintain relationships or boundaries. Working together, we can focus on rebuilding your sense of self, understanding your experiences, and developing strategies to regain balance, confidence, and emotional well-being.
  • Trauma and PTSD “Surviving trauma is a bittersweet victory.” Life may never look quite the same, yet there remains reason for hope and healing.
  • Grief: Death and Loss Each person experiences grief in their own way, whether the loss stems from a death, the end of a relationship, or the loss of a long-held hope or dream. I’m sorry you’re hurting. Having support through the grieving process can make a meaningful difference.
  • Family Members of Addicts and Alcoholics You may be a parent, partner, or adult child of someone struggling with addiction and find yourself thinking, “If anyone could keep them sober, it would be me.” Sadly, addiction doesn’t work that way. In trying to help, you may have lost yourself in the process. Working with a licensed counselor in Virginia can help you reclaim your sense of balance.
  • Recovery Recovery is worth the effort. I draw from an integrated 12-step framework in my approach to recovery counseling. Taking care of your mental health can safeguard your sobriety. (Please note: I do not see court-mandated clients.)
  • Pre- and Postnatal Pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood bring profound changes, whether it’s your first child or your ninth. Having compassionate support from a licensed counselor in Virginia during this transition can help you navigate the challenges more smoothly.
  • Depression Life’s pressures can sometimes become overwhelming, making it hard to show up fully or meet responsibilities. If you’ve been feeling discouraged, exhausted, or stuck, it’s important to know that depression is highly treatable.
  • Perfectionism and Accepted Anxiety Fear of being in the spotlight can create barriers at work or in school, but this type of anxiety responds well to treatment.
  • Spiritual and Existential Struggles At times, our beliefs and circumstances may seem at odds. You might feel uncertain about your path, your purpose, or your place in the world. Exploring these questions with a licensed counselor in Virginia can help you move toward a renewed sense of peace and self-understanding.
  • Life Transitions Starting college or a new career, becoming a parent, moving, or living independently—change is inevitable, yet rarely easy. If recent changes have left you off balance, we can work together to help you adapt and regain stability.
  • Support for Success You hold yourself to high standards and may find the path toward achievement lonely or uncertain. Relationships, stability, and motivation can shift along the way. Having space to process and recharge can help sustain your success and overall well-being.
  • LGBTQQI Support As a lifelong ally, I understand the ongoing challenges of living in a heteronormative culture. With guidance from a licensed counselor in Virginia, I offer a supportive, affirming environment where you can focus on your well-being and personal growth.
